Newquay Art8 Festival Drawingonthings Workshop

Last Sunday was genuinely the sunniest day of the year by far! Loads of people turned up for this event in the back garden of the Newquay Arms as part of the Art8 festival.

The pub and Art8 had sponsored the event so that members of the public could get involved as part of the festival which is the first of what will hopefully be an annual showcase of art in and around Newquay.

A few adults took part too but other than that, the average age of the artists making these pictures was 10 years old, all participants had never used spray paint before. Some of these guys had travelled from bristol to do this workshop! All were complete naturals!

The Youthy Chillerz vs Cosmic

Newquay youth club, Tuesday last week. This was a Drawingonthings Workshop approached as a collaboration between myself and the group who, when asked to give themselves a name, chose "Youthy Chillerz". Brilliant.

The theme is "positive things (or things we like) about Newquay.




The eagle-eyed among you reading this will spot the quote "Believe In Yourself" which is also in the previous post. This is purely coincidental.

I re-visited Newquay Youth Centre to paint the walls based on ideas that had emerged from the "drawingonthings workshop" (everybody drawing whatever they wanted on the wall) I held there during an open day at the youth centre almost 2 weeks ago.

This time it was just me painting to get the walls ready for the centre to open again in September. I tried to remain true to the lively and imaginative use of shapes, colours and imagery that emerged from the first session (which were drawn on the wooden triangular panel, and are a big part of the work! See bottom picture) and almost follow on from those first group doodles in the "drawingonthings workshop".

The major surfing and nightlife town has a bright and colourful reputation but quite often focus, in the press for example, is drawn towards the negative. Projects like this help to remind residents and visitors of all the positive aspects to Newquay.

I purposefully avoided the obvious and direct images and used the open and non-judgemental collective doodles from the "drawingonthings workshop" to dictate the content of the murals to ensure a unique and original piece that could only belong to Newquay.

Newquay Youth Centre Open Day, yesterday.

The white part of the wall is the start of where the larger art will begin throughout the room, so this is a consultation with young people who love living in Newquay and use Newquay Youth Centre or, for some, who only found out about the centre yesterday during the open day.

The art project is to express the many enjoyable and positive things about living in Newquay.

To get the ideas flowing I suggested ways that everybody could begin doodling, despite how well they thought they could draw, and the drawing didn't stop all day!

About 30 new artists added ideas, shapes and colours to the wall, including some of the newspaper photographers (who couldn't resist when I offered them the chance!).

The artwork for the main part of the wall will be done by me in September or October. And by looking at some of the ideas coming through yesterday, this will be a very creative project indeed!

MOR artwork!

MOR Surf Lodge in Newquay called me up to paint a unique mural on the front wall, which will be a 'sunset beach in the evening'.

It has amazing sunsets from the front beer garden. So, the beach, sunset, the company logo (an "O" with a 'tor' above it -from MOR, which is celtic for something) and brand, surfing and Newquay were all in the brief.

It's opening any day now. They have a board store and tons of quirky additions to make your trip 100% ace and memorable! It does look like it's going to be a very cool place.

Even if you live in Cornwall it's well worth a visit. The bar is open to non-residents and, if you're enjoying yourselves, ditch the car and get a room!

I also did a "60 second makeover" on a chest of drawers for the interior designer while I was there.

Directions: Get to Newquay, find Mount Wise (the highest road which runs along the ridge of the town from the roundabout, before south fistral, to the traffic lights, before the railway station) and look out for a massive blue and white building with this artwork on the front!

BACK TO FISTRAL FOR ANOTHER QUIKIE!!

drawing for quiksilver again this weekend!!! fistral beach quiksilver surf showdown 09, also with legendary guitar manufacturers gibson! live music, surf comp and much booze-ridden excitement!!!! ..and hanging out on the gibson tour bus!!

i have no idea what ill be doing constructively, but it will involve drawing on stuff, having fun, surfing, enjoying the music and beer, and hopefully sun, .. you get the idea!! ::)))

..i was just explaining this to a friend, beth, i bumped into just now in the villiage shop. we were talking about what were doing for the weekend, she says "i need a job where i get to do what i enjoy!" i said "what do you enjoy?" and the conversation lead onto photography, travel, food (but not a chef!), maybe organizing foodie nights, etc and i suggested blogging as a way to share and focus on her interest..

..kind of reminded me why i started this.

..so when beth starts her blog ill post a link here. she suggested a great name.

i was hired for quiksilver at this years relentless boardmasters festival in newquay. i had a great time! and drew all day every day. only stopping to eat, go for a pee and a surf at the end of each day. someone worked out that i drew on about 80 hats and t-shirts each day.
i slept for fifteen hours last night.
